    Kenya Defence Forces hold annual recruitments and must be aged between 26 - 34 years to be eligible. Its remuneration is periodically reviewed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to establish competitiveness and fairness. Furthermore, the salary is strictly based on the particular rank, years of experience, and responsibilities.

    KDF Salary Structure by Rank

    Level of education and years of experience are some of the factors that determine ranking and remuneration in the Kenya Army. The salaries are evaluated by SRC every four years. Besides the basic salary, officers are entitled to allowances, for instance, those residing in the barracks enjoy benefits such as buying commodities at half the market price.

    Allowances and Benefits

    In addition to their basic salaries, officers receive allowances and benefits to increase their overall compensation package. Allowances and benefits include:

    • Housing Allowance - provided to officers who do not reside in the official military housing.
    • Medical Cover - comprehensive healthcare services for members and their immediate families.
    • Risk Allowance - Officers are paid between Ksh 5,000 to Ksh 10,000 per day upon deployment outside the country. 
    • Leave allowance - Additional compensation during official leave periods.
    • Foreign Service Allowance -  Additional incurred expenses are covered for officers serving abroad.
    • Outfit Allowance -  If posted outside the country, clothing needs for the officer and their family are taken care of.
    • Pension or Retirement Benefits - Officers receive retirement packages to ensure they are financially secure after service.

    KDF Rank Structure

    The KDF rank hierarchy is divided into commissioned and non-commissioned officers. Commissioned officers are responsible for making decisions and plans while non-commissioned officers lead and train troops. The ranks are further sub-divided to many sub-groups and promotions are determined by the personnel’s merit.

    Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs)

    Also called NCOs, the military officers do not pursue a commission and earn positions of authority through promotion across the enlisted ranks. 

    NCOs Ranking from the Lowest to Highest

    1. Private Officer - The lowest rank, and this is after the soldier completes the initial stage of military training.
    2. Lance Corporal - Private officer advances to lance corporal after three years of serving or after passing phase 2 training. The lance corporal manages a team, called a section; around four soldiers.
    3. Corporal - The third lowest rank of NCOs, which attained after six to eight years of military service. A soldier is promoted based on their leadership skills. Corporals manage a larger number of soldiers than a lance corporal and oversee military equipment such as tanks and guns.
    4. Sergeant - A soldier becomes a sergeant after 12 years of exceptional military service. They command a Platoon, 35 soldiers, and advise the junior officers. 
    5. Senior Sergeant - They are of two types, Staff and Color Sergeant. Become a Senior Sergeant after two years as a Sergeant. A Senior Sergeant commands an Army company, equivalent to about 120 soldiers.
    6. Warrant Officer II - trains, promotes, and disciplines a group of 120 soldiers. Also, they are senior advisers to a Major commanding a sub-unit. 
    7. Warrant Officer I -  a soldier becomes Warrant Officer I after 18 years of brilliant military service. They command up to 650 officers and soldiers.

    Commissioned Officers

    The administrative KDF soldiers start as cadets and scale up the ranks. They train at Kenya Military Academy (KMA) in Lanet, Nakuru County. 

    Below are the ranks of KDF Commissioned Officers from lowest to highest.

    Officer Cadet  - Officers are fresh from training and the most junior among the commissioned officers. 

    Second Lieutenant -  Officers become second lieutenants after two years of graduating from KMA. The rank can last for three years while undergoing specialized training. They are responsible for up to 30 soldiers in a troop or platoon, in operations and training. 

    Lieutenant - Become a Lieutenant after three to five years of service, and stay in the rank for three years while gaining specialized skills from your unit. Afterwards, lead up to 30 soldiers in a troop or platoon. 

    Captain - To attain this position, you must have served for up to six years and will be second in command for up to 120 soldiers in a sub-unit. You are tasked with decision-making and planning processes with on-ground tactical responsibility for operations, logistic support, maintenance of equipment, and workforce. 

    Major - You will gain promotion to a Major after 8 - 10 years of outstanding service and leadership skills. You get to command a sub-unit of about 120 soldiers and officers. Majors are responsible for their sub-unit's administration, welfare, and training, both in operations and the camps, and for managing their equipment. 

    Lieutenant Colonel - Officers command 4 to 5 sub-unit, about 650 soldiers and officers. A Lieutenant Colonel only holds the office for two years. 

    Colonel - The staff are senior operational advisors to the senior officers and serve as staff officers between brigade or battalion-level field commands. 

    Brigadier - Field officer in charge of a brigade or a staff director. 

    Major General - They are responsible for divisions, senior staff appointments, and in charge of promotions in the military. 

    Lieutenant General - The highest in military ranks in Kenya. You are in charge of forming sizes for the Corps. 

    General -  The highest-ranking soldier and the chief of defense forces. The General holds the positions of the Vice Chief of Defense Staff, Chief of Defense Staff, or General Staff.

    Kenyan Air Force ranks and salaries

    It was established on 1 June 1964, with the UK's assistance. KAF headquarters are at Moi Air Base in Eastleigh, Nairobi with 152 aircrafts that operate from Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki.
