Kenya: The World’s Silicon Savannah

Kenya is known as the Silicon Savannah due to its thriving tech ecosystem, positioning itself as Africa's leading hub of innovation, with Nairobi at the forefront of this digital revolution.

The term Silicon Savannah that refers to Kenya was drawn from southern San Francisco Bay Area of California which is a home for numerous start-up global tech firms such as Google, Facebook and Apple among many others.

Kenya’s standout technological achievement is M-Pesa, a mobile banking service launched by Safaricom in 2007 under President Mwai Kibaki, which took the world by storm.

This game-changing technology revolutionized Kenya’s financial and economic landscape and cemented its status as a leader in fintech and startup culture, driving the country’s continued dominance in Africa’s tech scene.
