The term CDS stands for Central Depository System Account which is an electronic account that is tasked with the sole purpose of holding shares. There are three ways in which you can acquire a CDS account.

       i.          Through the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)

      ii.          Via the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation Limited (CDSC)

     iii.          Or commonly using an approved depository which can be found in banks.

       i.          Visit the CDSC website.

      ii.          Click CDS forms under Products & Services.

     iii.          Download the CDS Form 1 (Securities Account Opening/ Maintenance Form)

     iv.          Fill out the form in duplicate and submit it to the relevant office.

How to Open a CDS account with the Central Bank of Kenya

Visit any branch of the Central Bank of Kenya

At the bank, request of the specimen signature mandate card

Complete the card in clear block letters. Ensure your handwriting is neat and visible. Ensure you write your name as it appears on your national identification document. The card should not contain any errors or alternations and must NOT be folded or disf*gured.

Next, the signatories will be required to sign the card in the presence of a designated CBK officer or another authorised agent.

Once completed, submit the card in person to the CBK. The card should be accompanied by other stipulated requirements, as explored below.

Once the CDS account is opened, the investor will be notified of the unique number via email, as provided on the CDS mandate card. Read more: 

As you submit your completed card, ensure it is accompanied by the following documents.

One recent coloured passport size photograph (of the holder). The reverse side of the photograph MUST be certified by the applicant's banker and stamped. It must NOT be stapled or glued to the card.

An original and clear copy of your national identity card/ passport/ alien certificate for verification.

An original and clear copy of your Kenya Revenue Authority PIN (KRA PIN)

A filled out the email indemnity agreement, which requires a witness.

NB: Two signatories of your bankers (commercial bank or financial institution) must sign and stamp the card on the space provided to confirm your bank details. Ensure you register for CBK-Treasury Mobile Direct (TMD) for particular mobile services on government securities.
