I'm so glad you’re here because today, you are going to learn something very important. I know since you are here and  reading this have big dreams—dreams about , securing your financial futureimproving your health, building your fitness, strengthening relationships, or maybe even scaling that side hustle into a successful business. But sometimes, it feels like you keep failing to to follow on your responsibilities or goals, right?

All is not lost, just know that you're not alone. Many of us have goals we want to achieve, yet somehow, the progress stalls, and we find ourselves stuck. But today, we’re going to change that. We’re here to move the needle, to figure out what sets the achievers apart—the top 6%—from the rest.

Last year, I conducted a research surveying 1,000 people across different counties in Kenya, asking them about their goals for the year. They all started the year with high hopes—plans to hit the gym more, save more money from your earnings, budget appropriately, make more money from your business, improve relationships, and so on. But by February, 94% of them had already given up on those goals.

So, what about the 6% who stuck it out and saw their dreams come true? What did they do differently? That’s what I want to share with you today—the three secrets that helped them succeed.

1. Take Charge of Your Mindset

The first thing the Sixers did was take charge of their mindset. Your brain uses about 20% of your body’s energy just to get through the day. Think about it—getting up, checking social media, going through the motions at work or school—it all takes up a lot of mental energy. Now, every time you ask your brain to do something new, like starting a workout routine or learning a new skill, it resists. It says, "Are you kidding me? I’m already maxed out!"

This is where most people sign a deal with their brain: “I’ll just stick to what I know; it’s easier.” But not the Sixers. They set their minds to do something different. They refused to stay stuck in the same routines that weren’t getting them anywhere.

So, ask yourself: are you going to keep signing that deal, or are you going to take charge and do something different?

2. Embrace the Law of Specification

The second secret is what is known as the Law of Specification. The more specific you are with your goals, the more likely you are to achieve them. For example, instead of saying, “I’m going to save money this year,” the Sixers say, “I’m going to save KSh 5,000 every month by cutting down on things that take money away and putting that money into a savings account.”

Being specific and granular with your goals makes them tangible and easier to follow through on. It’s like setting your alarm for 5 a.m. every day, laying out your workout clothes the night before, and scheduling your workout in your calendar. When you know exactly what you need to do and when, it’s easier to get it done.

3. Use the 0-to-10 Rule

Lastly, the Sixers use the 0-to-10 rule. In our fast-paced world, especially here in Kenya, where the hustle is real, everyone is busy. But being busy doesn’t mean you’re making progress. The Sixers know that not all tasks are created equal.

They focus on their 10s—the tasks that will have the biggest impact on their goals. Maybe it’s a critical meeting with a potential client, a deep work session on a project, or quality time spent with family. They do these tasks first before getting to the less important stuff. By prioritizing what matters most, they avoid burnout and ensure steady progress toward their goals.

Make 2024 Your Year

As the new year approaches, think about how you can apply these principles to your own life. Start small. Pick one goal—maybe it’s getting fit, starting a savings plan, or growing your side hustle—and get specific about how you’re going to achieve it. Focus on that one thing for 30 days. Then, once it becomes a habit, move on to the next.
