Filing nil returns in Kenya is a straightforward process if you have no taxable income to declare. Follow this step-by-step guide to file your nil returns easily via the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax portal or mobile app.

Filing Nil Returns on the iTax Portal

  1. Visit the iTax Portal: Go to https://itax.kra.go.ke.

  2. Log In to Your Account:

    • Enter your PIN and click Continue.

    • Input your password.

    • If you have forgotten your password, click Forgot Password/Unlock Account.

    • Solve the security arithmetic question and click Submit. A password reset link will be sent to your registered email address.

  3. Update Your Professional Details:

    • Once logged in, update your professional details if prompted to proceed.

  4. Navigate to the Returns Menu:

    • Click Returns > File Nil Return.

  5. Select Your Tax Obligation:

    • Choose the appropriate tax obligation and click Next.

  6. Enter Return Period:

    • The return period "From" and "To" fields will be auto-populated.

    • Click Submit.

  7. Download the Returns Receipt:

    • After submission, download and save the receipt as proof of filing.

Filing Nil Returns Using the iTax Mobile App

If you’ve filed an IT1 return on iTax before, you can use the iTax mobile app for subsequent nil returns.

  1. Download the iTax Mobile App:

    • Go to the Google Play Store and download the app.

  2. Log In:

    • Use your PIN and iTax password (ensure you’ve logged in before on the iTax portal).

  3. File Nil Returns:

    • Click File Nil Return.

    • Select Resident or Non-Resident Individual as applicable.

    • Submit the return.
