Where Can I Open a CDS Account in Kenya?

If you’ve been wondering where or how to open a Central Depository System (CDS) account, you’re in the right place. At Fineducke, we’ve put together a simple guide that walks you through the process step by step.

Before we dive in, let’s make sure we’re on the same page about what a CDS account is.

A CDS account, short for Central Depository System account, is an electronic account used to hold your shares. Think of it as a digital locker for your investments.

In Kenya, you can open a CDS account in three main ways:

    1. Through the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)
    2. Via the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation Limited (CDSC)
    3. Through an approved depository, often found in banks

How to Open a CDS Account with the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation Limited

    1. Visit the CDSC website.
    2. Click CDS forms under Products & Services.
    3. Download the CDS Form 1 (Securities Account Opening/ Maintenance Form)
    4. Fill out the form in duplicate and submit it to the relevant office.
