    Karua entered politics in the early 1990s, joining the push for multi-party democracy. She was elected as the Member of Parliament for Gichugu Constituency in 1992, a position she held until 2013. During her tenure, she served as Minister for Water Resources Management and Development (2003–2005) and later as Minister for Justice, National Cohesion, and Constitutional Affairs (2005–2009) under President Mwai Kibaki.

    In 2013, Karua ran for the presidency under the Narc-Kenya ticket, becoming the third woman to vie for Kenya's highest office. Although she did not win, her candidacy was a significant milestone for women in Kenyan politics. In 2022, she was selected as the running mate for Raila Odinga in the general elections, representing the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.
