Samuel Kamau Macharia, widely known as SK Macharia, was born in 1942 in Ndakaini Village, Murang'a County, Kenya. Raised in a humble background, his parents were squatters working on British settler plantations. Tragedy struck early when his mother passed away when he was just five years old. By 1985, Madhupaper was the only Kenyan tissue manufacturer with 300 employees. However, the company was placed under receivership by Kenya Commercial Bank in October 1985.
Undeterred, Macharia founded Royal Media Services (RMS) in 1990, which has grown to become one of Kenya's largest private radio and television networks. RMS owns Citizen TV, Inooro TV, and multiple radio stations, including Radio Citizen, Hot 96, and several vernacular stations. The company also operates digital platforms like Viusasa and Citizen Digital.
